Sonos 27 Opens Your Speakers to ChatGPT, Custom Agents, and a New In-House AI Assistant

If you own a Sonos speaker, you're in for a genuinely different software experience over the next few months. The company hasn't made a software announcement this big since its 2024 app redesign went wrong. Sonos 27 is an entire operating system rebrand with AI-driven experiences at its center, rolling out alongside the refreshed app from September 8.

The basic idea is simple: reduce friction between hardware and software for a more natural experience. The update focuses on three components. First, Sonos 27voice, the in-house assistant for music and mood control, arriving as opt-in early access this fall. Then Sonos 27mcp, which integrates AI into hardware by opening gates for third-party AI assistants to control music and speakers directly. Sonos named OpenAI's ChatGPT in its release, with Gemini or Claude likely to debut soon. This arrives in early access next week.

Further out, Sonos Custom Agents go beyond music - letting anyone build up to ten personal assistants with distinct voices and personalities for different jobs, like household routines, connected-service voice control, and smart home experiences. Sonos is treating its home sound system as an ecosystem where third-party AI models and custom agents interact directly with hardware, not just for media playback.

The refreshed app gets reorganized navigation and pinned room sorting, plus a charming virtual volume knob you can twist with two fingers - iOS-only for now. Everything ships gradually starting September 8.

After nearly destroying customer trust with its 2024 redesign, Sonos is betting on AI to run its software. For the smart home industry, speakers are shifting from "devices that play music" to "AI gateways in your home." When you can say "order pizza" instead of "play the pizza playlist," voice assistants mean something entirely different.
