FAQ

Is MD5 secure?
MD5 has been proven to have serious security vulnerabilities and is considered cryptographically broken. For security-critical scenarios (such as password storage or digital signatures), we recommend using SHA-256 or stronger hashing algorithms. MD5 is currently only suitable for file integrity verification and non-security fingerprint calculations.

What is an MD5 collision?
An MD5 collision occurs when two different input datasets produce the exact same MD5 hash value. Since MD5 outputs are only 128 bits (32 hexadecimal characters), collisions are theoretically possible. In 2004, cryptographers demonstrated methods to quickly generate MD5 collisions, making it unsuitable for security-critical applications.
