FAQ

What is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 printable characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /). It's commonly used to embed images, files, and other binary data in text-based formats like HTML (data URIs), JSON, and URLs.

How much larger does Base64 encoding make the data?
Encoded data is approximately 33% larger than the original. Every 3 bytes (24 bits) of original data are split into 4 groups of 6 bits, each corresponding to one Base64 character, so 3 bytes become 4 characters. If the original byte count isn't divisible by 3, padding characters (=) are added.

Base64 of a UTF-8 text, percent-escapes that leave a plus sign alone, and a Unicode converter that rewrites even the letter A — the three encode pages on this site are reversible by design, so the useful details are the boundaries: padding, plus signs, surrogates and which box the result lands in.
